Rules for any sweepstakes in North Carolina
- Electronic sweepstakes with an entertaining display (N.C. Gen. Stat. section 14-306.4): [S1]
What the rule requires
G.S. 14-306.4 (enacted 2010) makes it unlawful to operate an electronic machine or device to conduct or promote a sweepstakes “through the use of an entertaining display, including the entry process or the reveal of a prize”, such as video poker, video bingo or slot-style games. The statute defines the machine as one owned, leased or possessed by a sweepstakes sponsor or promoter and intended to be used by an entrant; it does not mention the internet or online play, although it applies whether or not the machine is server-based or remotely activated. A first offense is a Class 1 misdemeanor, with felonies for repeat offenses.
